The Jackson 5 picture was taken in 1969 at the beach in Malibu, California, late in the afternoon. Diana Ross, whom I had just photographed for the New York Times, suggested the shoot. To get some movement into the photograph, I brought along a “ghetto blaster” player and I played their a song Diana has just told me they had recorded. Little did I know that some 5 months later ABC, 123 would be a hit single all over.
