Isabella Blow asleep after a weekend filming at Hilles House, Elizabeth Street, London, 1994

British born photographer Gary Wallis has been a freelance photographer for 20 years working mainly in fashion and portraiture. He has shot for magazines around the world including Japanese Vogue, Dutch Elle, British Marie Claire, The Independent Magazine, The Evening Standard, Dazed and Confused, Swedish Slitz Magazine and lots more. His commercial clients have included Topman, Motorolla, Lloyds and Harper Collins. Wallis has taught photography part time at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design for 20 years and is now Subject Leader in Photography for the Visual Communication Design Program. Wallis first met Lee McQueen, later to ‘become’ Alexander McQueen, while they were both studying at Central Saint Martins. Lee asked Gary to shoot his MA graduation collection. A year later they bumped into each other one afternoon in Soho shortly after Lee’s first collection, ‘Nihilism’. They had not seen each other for a while: Lee had graduated from CSM and Gary was busy in his final year. Lee asked him to come to the next show to shoot some pictures and make a short ‘home movie’ for a launch event in NYC. Gary then shot this film and the show backstage plus the next four shows: Banshee, The Birds, Highland Rape, The Hunger and Dante. Wallis's work featured in the 2015 Proud Chelsea exhibition 'McQueen: Backstage - The Early Shows'.
