Smoky Stones on Grass, 1968
Michael Joseph is the celebrated photographer best known for his work on the Rolling Stones classic album, Beggars Banquet. Michael took the Beggars Banquet session photographs of the Rolling Stones over a weekend in 1968 on location in London and Derbyshire. The two day shoot took place at Sarum Chase and Swarkestone on the 18th and 19th June 1968. When the Stones arrived at Sarum Chase (the former home of Victorian society painter Frank Owen Salisbury) they were greeted by a wide array of lights and props. A cat, a sheep, a goat and three dogs added to the eccentric, opulent surroundings, with Michael dictating events using a megaphone. He was renowned for staging large group scenes of peoples and animals, and the results were never short of stunning. As well as over thirty years of varied advertising assignments, six hundred of his images appeared in a course book on photography produced in association with travel writer David Saunders. Michael has recently returned to the world of photography after a three-year hiatus.
