David Bowie and Iggy Pop
David Bowie & Iggy Pop the day after the concert, at the main railway station in Copenhagen, waiting for leaving to London, 1976
Jan Persson is a Danish photographer who has been fervently documenting jazz culture in and around Copenhagen since 1962. At 16, during a morning paper round, a tribute to saxophone player Charlie Parker caught young Persson’s eye unleashing within him a drive to explore the booming jazz scene around the capital. During the 60s and 70s many American blues and rock artists were drawn to Copenhagen’s swinging atmosphere and Persson was able to capture the iconic artists of the era including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin and Louis Armstrong.
Persson’s work has been featured on more than 1000 LP and CD covers and in 2004 he was awarded the Ben Webster Prize for his delicate and poetic contributions to the jazz field. His unique and highly contrasted work that illuminates the depth and beauty of such a soulful movement has earned him the reputation as one of the finest photographers of jazz music worldwide.
