Fashion designer Mary Quant in her studio in Chelsea, measuring  the length of a mini skirt, Kings Road, 1965

Born in 1935 in Tuscany, Romano Cagnoni grew up in tumultuous circumstances. A childhood spent as a refugee saw Cagnoni narrowly escape the Nazi massacre in Sant’Anna. Destruction following the war left him pressed for work and it was purely by chance that he found a job assisting a local photographer. Cagnoni met Simon Guttman and Stefan Lorant, together considered as the founders of modern photojournalism, and took great influence from them. He has documented war, famine, and disease to reveal the struggles of humanity, and his images have filled the pages of 'Life' and many other magazines. Cagnoni’s coverage of the civil war in Nigeria earned him the USA Overseas Press Award. His exclusively cultural subjects offer images describing the conditions that define our existence. Cagnoni recently featured in Proud Chelsea’s exhibition Sex, Drugstores and Rock & Roll: A History of The Kings Road in 2011.
