'Gendarme and Son', Paris, 1949

Ivan Massar’s career as a photojournalist began during WWII aboard the US Carrier Franklin, where he photographed a Japanese kamikaze attack on his ship. His post-war training began on the streets of Paris and the cities of an emerging communist Europe, and continued into the Sixties and beyond. Massar’s distinguished portfolio reflects the moods of American and European life often striking a graphic image. His works have appeared in Life, Look, National Geographic and Paris Match. His passion for the writings of Thoreau and Edna St Vincent Millay led to his publication of The Illustrated World of Thoreau and Take Up the Song; both featuring Massar’s images carefully matched to selected texts. Proud Chelsea presented a selection of Massar’s shots from Paris in Paris Je T’aime in 2010.
