Catherine Deneuve in Cap and Glasses, 1965

Although having no formal training in the art of photography, Eric Swayne’s popularity amongst the in crowd of 1960’s London meant he had a rare, inside view into the coolest lives of the era. Picking up a camera for the first time at the ripe age of 29, Swayne began photographing his friends including David Bailey and Brian Duffy. He taught himself how to develop and print his own work and with the encouragement of surrounding photographers, took advantage of his growing popularity and shot portraits of absolutely everybody. Through this insight into the lives of superstars, Swayne became one of the hottest photographers of the time and figures such as Ossie Clark and Mick Jagger spent time in his studio. His exclusive inside view of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ makes Swayne’s shots an invaluable addition to Proud Galleries’ Ossie Clark: The King of Kings Road Reigns Again, which then led to a solo show at Proud Chelsea entitled The Stones and their Scene: Photographs by Eric Swayne.
