Andrew Birkin is an English writer and film director, as well as a keen photographer. After working for Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey and his aborted Napoleon, Birkin conceived and wrote The Lost Boys for the BBC, an award-winning trilogy of films about Peter Pan's creator J M Barrie, as well as a definitive biography. In 1981 Birkin won the BAFTA short film award for writing and directing Sredni Vashtar, as well as an Oscar nomination, and in 1993 he won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Festival for his film based on Ian McEwan's The Cement Garden, which starred his niece Charlotte Gainsbourg. Birkin has written numerous screenplays, including The Name of the Rose and Perfume: the Story of a Murderer; his latest script, based on D B C Pierre's Vernon God Little, is being directed by Werner Herzog in 2014. A selection of Birkin’s photographs of his sister Jane and Serge Gainsbourg were published last year by Taschen in Jane & Serge: A Family Album. Birkin is currently working with his son Ned on a screenplay based on Frank Schätzing's The Swarm. He is married to painter Karen Birkin and lives in North Wales with their two young children. Birkin's photographs feature in the 2014 Proud Chelsea exhibition Jane & Serge.
